Solid Start To Road Trip

EUGENE, Ore. - No. 38 Stanford outlasted No. 51 Oregon 4-3 on Friday afternoon to begin a two-match road swing through the Pacific Northwest.

The Cardinal (11-4, 3-0 Pac-12) remained unbeaten in conference play, holding on to defeat the Ducks (11-7, 0-3 Pac-12) for its fifth straight win overall.

Stanford, which visits No. 59 Washington on Sunday, jumped out to a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point with victories at the top two courts.

Robert Stineman extended the Cardinal’s lead to 2-0, defeating Cormac Clissold 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.

Oregon got on the board with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win from Jayson Amos at the No. 4 position, but John Morrissey’s 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the No. 2 spot pushed Stanford ahead 3-1.

The Ducks fought back to tie the match at 3-3, with Cardinal rookies Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski suffering rare losses.

But freshman David Hsu held on for the clincher at No. 6, outlasting Joey Swaysland 7-6 (1), 2-6, 6-4.
