EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon scored six times before the end of the third inning to cruise to a 7-3 victory over the Stanford baseball team Friday evening at PK Park. The Cardinal lost in a series opener for the first time in its last four tries.
Stanford (19-23, 5-13 Pac-12) made things interesting with three runs in the sixth but the deficit proved too much. The Cardinal got itself into trouble in the early innings, walking five and hitting another batter to allow the Ducks to score two in the first and three in the second on just two hits.
Six Stanford pitchers combined to issue 13 free passes (11 walks, two hit by pitch) in the losing effort. Brett Hanewich (3-4) took the loss, allowing five runs in 1.2 innings. No Cardinal pitcher threw more than Colton Hock’s 2.0 innings.
Oregon (26-19, 8-11 Pac-12) did not do much on offense without Stanford’s help. Mitchell Tolman had a 2-for-3 night with three RBI out of the No. 3 hole, but no other Duck registered multiple hits or RBI.
Tommy Edman reached base four times, twice on singles and twice on walks, to lead Stanford’s offense. Edman singled and scored in the sixth inning that included a sac fly from Beau Branton, an Alex Dunlap RBI groundout and a two-out two-strike RBI single from Jonny Locher.
Zach Hoffpauir, who doubled in the first, joined Edman with two hits. Hoffpauir is hitting a team-best .380 in Pac-12 play.
The two teams each had seven total hits.
The second game of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. PT. Marc Brakeman (1-2, 2.81 ERA) will square off against David Peterson (3-5, 5.17 ERA). A large crowd is expected as the Oregon football team’s spring game is slated for 11 a.m. PT.
