LOS ANGELES -- Austin Barr delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth to propel the Stanford baseball team to a 3-2 win over USC Saturday night at Dedeaux Field. The Cardinal and Trojans split the first two games of a three-game set.

Stanford (21-27, 7-16 Pac-12) was slowed by left-hander starter Kyle Twomey, before breaking a 26-inning scoreless streak in the eighth. After Drew Jackson singled to lead off the decisive inning, three straight walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Matt Winaker, set the table for Barr. The right-handed hitting DH lined the first pitch he saw to right field to score Tommy Edman and Zach Hoffpauir.

Marc Brakeman started for the Cardinal in a battle of draft-eligible hurlers, who each had impressive summers in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The starters looked good in six innings of work, but a RBI double by Dante Flores in the fourth and a solo home run by Timmy Robinson in the sixth forced Brakeman to exit trailing 2-0.

Brakeman scattered six hits and struck out five, while not issuing a free pass, in his fourth start since returning from an arm injury.

Twomey (7-2) allowed five hits and struck out six Cardinal hitters to put him in line for the win before the Brent Wheatley surrendered the lead. The first of four USC relievers allowed all three runs on just one hit, while walking two, in 1.1 innings.

Tyler Thorne (3-0) shut down USC in the final three innings for his second relief win in the last four games. He struck out four, including the last two hitters he faced to strand the tying run at second base in the ninth.

USC’s (33-16, 14-9 Pac-12) Blake Lacey went 2 for 3 to be the only Trojan with multiple knocks.

Quinn Brodey singled twice out of the No. 9-hole for his second straight productive night at the plate after going 1 for 2 with a pair walks in a 1-0 loss Friday night. Barr and Edman joined Brodey with two hits.

The rubber match is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.
