SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Stanford captured its 11th consecutive Big Sail on Tuesday in front of a large and energetic crowd at the St. Francis Yacht Club.
Sailing in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, skipper Antoine Screve and crews Axel Sly, Sammy Steele, Noelle Herring, Yuki Yoshiyasu and J.P. Cannistraro led Stanford to a 2-0 sweep of Cal in the varsity division.
Other divisions included the Alumni (39 years old and younger), Masters (40-59 years old) and Grand Masters (60+ years old).
Cal won the Alumni and Masters divisions, but Stanford claimed the Grand Masters division thanks to a late surge from skipper Alan Andrews, an All-American in 1976. Joining Andrews in the Grand Masters boat were Keith Milne (’76, ’79), Kim Desenberg (’69) and Tom Hutton (’77, ’78).
Taylor Robinson (’99), Phil Barrow (’98) and Anthony Krumeich (’08) represented Stanford in the Alumni division, with Rolf Kaiser (’95), Al Sargent (’91) and Dave Lyons (’91, ’01) sailing in the Masters division.

The atmosphere was outstanding, with each school’s band performing in the yacht club dining area and on the balcony. With the sailors close enough to the yacht club to hear the bands as they compete, the Big Sail is unlike any other event on the schedule.
