STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford (18-7, 6-1 Pac-12) enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent memory, displaying continued progress in all phases throughout a campaign filled with milestones.
Making its 36th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, the Cardinal notched its first postseason victory since 2012, defeating Tennessee 4-2 in the first round in Durham, N.C., before falling 4-1 to host Duke one day later.
Despite showcasing a lineup that routinely featured three freshmen, the Cardinal clinched a share of the Pac-12 regular-season championship for the first time since 2010. Ranked No. 23-43 throughout the season, Stanford also reached the Pac-12 Tournament for the first time in school history.
In addition to its surprising Pac-12 regular-season finish, the Cardinal defeated UCLA and USC at home and pocketed two victories against California. Stanford’s seven losses all came against teams ranked among the top-30.
Seniors John Morrissey and Robert Stineman were awarded ITA All-America accolades in doubles, a key reason why the Cardinal was able to capture the doubles point in all but four matches. Checking in at No. 13 in the final edition of the rankings, Morrissey and Stineman (15-5 overall, 15-4 duals) ended the season by winning eight of their final 10 matches. The duo was 6-4 against nationally-ranked opponents and qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
Tom Fawcett was honored as the ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year and the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, leading the Cardinal with a 26-12 overall record and 14-7 mark in duals while playing all of his matches at the No. 1 spot. Earning a No. 35 national final ranking, Fawcett also received an at-large berth in the NCAA Singles Championship. Fawcett captured the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships title in October, becoming first Cardinal player to win the event since Ryan Thacher (2011) and first Stanford freshman to accomplish the feat since KJ Hippensteel (1998).
Fellow newcomer David Wilczynski received All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention status, finishing 22-14 overall and 13-9 in duals while becoming the first player in school history to play at least one dual match at all six singles spots.
Junior Nolan Paige (23-15 overall, 12-9 duals), freshman David Hsu (21-9 overall, 13-5 duals) and Morrissey (18-9 overall, 16-6 duals) were next on the ladder for singles competition. Morrissey ended the season with a No. 70 national ranking.
Meanwhile, first-year head coach Paul Goldstein was honored as the ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year and the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. Stanford’s first Taube Family Director of Men’s Tennis, Goldstein enjoyed a stellar collegiate career from 1995-98, leading the Cardinal to a 104-6 overall record while becoming the first player in NCAA history to compete as a starting member of four consecutive national championship teams.
