FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Madison Hayden and Gabriel Vega combined for 34 kills as the No. 13 Stanford men’s volleyball team held off IPFW (28-26, 27-29, 25-22, 28-26), Saturday, at Arnie Ball Court in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Cardinal moves to 2-0 on the year, while the Mastodons fall to 1-1.

Hayden notched a season-high 18 kills on .429 hitting and 10 digs for his second career double-double. Vega totaled 16 kills, nine digs and four blocks for the Cardinal. Senior middle blocker Conrad Kaminski added 10 kills on 13 errorless swings (.769) and a team-high seven blocks.

As a team, Stanford hit .302 while IPFW turned in a .207 clip. The Cardinal held a 15.0-14.0 edge in blocks and a 50-37 advantage in digs. Except for the third set in which Stanford never relinquished the lead, neither team was able to shake the other. For the match, there were 53 tie scores and 21 lead changes.

Senior setter James Shaw directed the offense with 49 assists. He also registered four kills, eight digs and five blocks, including three solo. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw finished with seven kills and five blocks, while freshman Jordan Ewert recorded five kills and six digs. Sophomore libero Evan Enriques anchored the defense with a match-high 13 digs.

IPFW was led by Andrew Sellan’s 22 kills. David Frazee added 10 kills, while Graydon Schroeder tallied nine kills and eight blocks for the Mastodons.

Stanford remains on the road next week, opening MPSF play in Provo, Utah at top-ranked BYU on Jan. 15-16.
