BERKELEY, Calif. - Another late rally was not in the cards for Stanford baseball as No. 18 Cal held off the Cardinal, 5-2, in a mid-week non-conference meeting at Evans Diamond on Tuesday night.
For the fourth straight game, the Cardinal found itself trailing in the early going. Cal took a 2-0 lead with a pair of solo home runs in the third. That was all Stanford starter John Hochstatter allowed in three innings, and reliever Kris Bubic added two more scoreless innings.?
Meanwhile, Stanford (19-12) added runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game. Junior Alex Dunlap and senior Austin Barr singled to lead off the fifth. They were bunted over and Dunlap scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Jack Klein.?
In the sixth, sophomore first baseman Matt Winaker, who made some impressive defensive plays on the night, singled to right with one out. He advanced to second on a groundout, and then beat the throw home on sophomore outfielder Quinn Brodey's single through the right side.?
Cal (22-11) opened the game up with three runs in the home half of the inning, including a two-RBI double with two outs.
Tyler Thorne, Kris Weisenberg and Colton Hock combined to shut down the Bears from there. But Stanford was unable to dent home plate again. The Cardinal, which rallied for three runs in the ninth to for a come-from-behind win at Cal on April 5, threatened with two on in the eighth, but a foul pop and strikeout ended the inning.
NEXT UP: Stanford returns to Sunken Diamond for its first home series in three weeks. The Cardinal host Arizona State on Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.). The first 500 fans at Saturday's game receive free ice cream in a mini Stanford helmet.
