STANFORD, Calif. – Junior shortstop Tommy Edman tied the game with two outs in the ninth, but Stanford baseball lost a seesaw battle in extras, 8-7, in the series finale with Arizona State at Sunken Diamond.
Juniors Jack Klein and Alex Dunlap each homered for the Cardinal as Dunlap finished with three hits and tied a career-high with three RBI. Freshman Brandon Wulff also had a pair of hits for Stanford, which dropped to 19-15 on the year and 7-8 in Pac-12 play.
For the third straight game, Arizona State (23-14, 9-9) took a 1-0 lead, only to be thwarted by Klein, who was the start of the Cardinal offense in every game this series. In the third inning on Sunday, he hit a go-ahead two-run home run into the trees in left field.
The Sun Devils tied the game in the fourth with a two-out double, but in the bottom of the frame, Dunlap duplicated Klein's home run with a go-ahead blast of his own. The junior catcher nearly hit the same tree as his centerfielder teammate to give Stanford a 3-2 lead.
The back-and-forth affair continued as the teams exchanged leads in the fifth. Arizona State went on top, 4-3, with a two-run homer, but Stanford responded with three runs in the home half of the inning for a 6-4 advantage. Junior Tommy Edman singled home Klein, and a pair of Cardinal scored on Dunlap's two-out single to left.
But in the seventh, the Sun Devils took the lead back. It took just three batters -- a walk, double and home run -- to give the visitors a 7-6 lead.
Freshman Brandon Wulff led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Alec Wilson was used as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a bunt from Beau Branton, and to third on a groundout from Klein. Edman hit a groundball up the middle which was mishandled by the second baseman and he beat the throw to tie the game.
Brian Serven hit the third round-tripper of the game for the Sun Devils -- a solo shot with one out in the tenth for the decisive run.
Dunlap, who tied a career high with three RBI, roped his third hit of the day into left for a leadoff single in the bottom of the 10th. But a line drive to first base turned into a double play and ended the threat.
NOTABLES: Klein had a home run and sacrifice bunt in the same game for the second time this season ... Dunlap had back-to-back multi-hit games and went 5-for-8 in the final two games of the series.
NEXT UP: Four more road games wrap up a stretch of 11 of 15 games away from Sunken Diamond. The road swing begins with a mid-week trip to Santa Clara on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Stanford then heads to Corvallis, Ore., for a three-game set with No. 14 Oregon State, Friday-Sunday.
