OJAI, Calif. - A strong tournament run for Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao came to an end in the doubles final on Sunday afternoon at the Pac-12 Championships.
Lord and Zhao dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to the nation’s No. 22-ranked duo of Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho from Arizona State. Tied 3-3 in the first set, Osborne and Panoho ripped off three straight games to gain the early advantage. In the second set, Osborne and Panoho won the final four games after building a 2-1 lead.
It was an impressive three-day stretch for Lord and Zhao, who have played only nine matches together after being paired up for the first time on March 25 in a dual against Colorado.
Lord and Zhao won their first three tournament matches against nationally-ranked opponents after facing only unranked foes prior to arriving in Ojai.
The Cardinal’s No. 2 tandem was seeking to become the ninth conference doubles champions in school history. Meanwhile, Zhao was looking to defend her crown after capturing last year’s title with Taylor Davidson.
Earlier on Sunday, Caroline Lampl came up short in her bid for the Invitational Division singles title after suffering a 6-1, 6-4 loss to California’s Olivia Hauger. Lampl had won the two previous meetings against Hauger, most notably providing the clincher in Stanford’s 4-3 upset victory last weekend.
