Bested By the Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Sophomore Quinn Brodey homered again, but Stanford baseball dropped its mid-week matchup at Santa Clara on Tuesday night, 4-2, at Schott Stadium.

The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in their first at bat. The leadoff reached on an error -- just the 17th of the season for the Cardinal (fewest in the nation) -- and scored on a two-out double to right center.

Stanford tied the game with two outs in the top of the third. Freshman Nico Hoerner doubled into the gap in right center and sophomore Matt Winaker followed with a bloop single to center to tie the game, 1-1.

It was the longest outing for John Hochstatter since his Tommy John surgery last year. He did not allow an earned run through the first four innings, but the first two hitters reached in the fifth. Freshman Kris Bubic came on in relief and got out of the inning with a double play and strikeout, but both runners came across to put the Broncos up 3-1.

Brodey blasted the first pitch of the sixth inning over the 402-foot sign and 13-foot wall in dead centerfield. His team-leading fifth home run of the year pulled Stanford within 3-2.

The Broncos got that one back with a solo shot to lead off the seventh. That was the only blemish in an impressive long relief appearance for Kris Bubic. The freshman logged 3.1 innings and struck out five. He was relieved by sophomore Tyler Thorne with one out and a runner on third in the eighth. Thorne promptly struck out both Broncos he faced to keep Stanford within two.

Sophomore Beau Branton reached as a pinch hitter with two outs in the ninth, but was stranded there to end it.

NOTABLES: Stanford opponent has scored first in eight straight games ... Dunlap walked in his first at-bat and has reached base in 10 straight games, the longest active streak for Stanford.

NEXT UP: Three more road games wrap up a stretch of 11 of 15 games away from Sunken Diamond. Stanford heads to Corvallis, Ore., for a three-game set with No. 10 Oregon State, Friday-Sunday.
