Pairs Fall in First Round

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Stanford’s top two pairs competed at the Pac-12 Conference Beach Volleyball Championships Thursday, dropping first-round decisions against Arizona and UCLA at Merle Norman Stadium.

Hayley Hodson and Payton Chang, the No. 9 seed in the pairs bracket, faced off with eighth-seeded Jianna Bonomi and Katarina Schulz of Arizona.

The Cardinal took the first set, 21-18, before dropping the second set, 16-21. The Wildcats clinched the match with a 15-10 victory in the third and final set to make the final score 2-1. Hodson and Chang fell to 4-8 on the season.

Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel, the No. 14 seed, faced off against Nicole McNamara and Megan McNamara. The Cardinal’s No. 2 pair fell 2-0 (21-14, 21-9), dropping to 5-7 on the season.

The No. 6 seed Cardinal (5-10 overall, 2-2 Pac-12) will compete in the team side of the competition Friday at 5 p.m. PT, facing off with No. 3 seed Arizona (15-3, 3-1). Live results will be available at GoStanford.com.
