Women Lead the Cardinal

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford sailing team competed in three regattas in as many states across the country this past weekend, highlighted by two second-place finishes.

At the Dellenbaugh Trophy in Providence, Rhode Island, the Cardinal finished second in an 18-team field. Junior Lily Katz skippered Stanford’s A-squad, with freshmen Kathryn Booker and Olivia Gugliemini serving as crews.

In the B-division, freshman skipper Maria El-Khazindar guided Stanford to a third-place finish in the group with sophomore Elena VandenBerg at crew. Rhode Island, Sailing World’s top-ranked women’s team, won the regatta.

At the St. Francis Invitational in San Francisco, Stanford fielded two teams, with the Cardinal squad taking second and the White team placing seventh. Senior Skipper Antoine Screve led the Cardinal A-team to first place in the division, with freshman Meg Gerli and senior Sammy Steele serving as crews. Sophomore skipper Luke Muller and junior crew Lauren Block added a fifth-place finish in the B-division for the Cardinal team.

Freshman skipper Martina Sly, sophomore crew Haley Fox and freshman crew Meg Gerli, representing the White squad, finished ninth in the A-division. Sophomore skipper Julia Lambert and senior crew Yuki Yoshiyasu finished seventh in the B-division for the White squad.

Stanford also finished ninth at the Lynne Marchiando Trophy in Boston, Massachusetts. Senior Axel Sly, junior Reinier Eenkema van Dijk, freshman Russell Clarida and freshman William Marshall served as skippers, with sophomores Grace Lucas and Kennedy Placek and freshmen Maggie Schult and Cassie Obel at crews.

The Cardinal returns to action next weekend, competing at the South Championship in Long Beach, California, and the Emily Wick Women’s Trophy in New London, Connecticut. Live results will be available at CollegeSailing.org.
