Another Series Victory

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Sophomore Andrew Summerville was spectacular in five innings of relief, and junior shortstop Tommy Edman knocked in three to give Stanford baseball an 8-2 road victory and series win at UCLA on Saturday night.

The Cardinal won its fourth straight series and third consecutive Pac-12 series. The last time Stanford won its first three Pac-12 series was in 2008 when the Cardinal went on to finish third at the College World Series.?

Summerville (3-1) entered in the third and pitched into the eighth. He allowed just one run, and handed the ball to Tyler Thorne, who earned his second save of the season with two scoreless innings of work. Meanwhile, Edman had three hits and three RBI, and junior catcher Alex Dunlap finished with a career-high four hits to pace the Cardinal offense.

It was a rainy start at Jackie Robinson Stadium as UCLA (13-16, 5-7 Pac-12) utilized a leadoff walk, two wild pitches and a two-out single to take a 1-0 lead in the second.

Stanford (17-9, 6-3) also took advantage of a leadoff walk to get on the scoreboard. In the top of the fifth, senior Jonny Locher walked, advanced to second on Jack Klein's sacrifice bunt, and then scored when Edman chopped a single through the middle. After Nico Hoerner also worked a walk, sophomore Matt Winaker singled back through the box to score Edman and put Stanford in front, 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning, the Bruins got one back. The first two hitters singled and two batters later, a sacrifice fly tied the game, 2-2, and ended Summerville's streak of 19.2 innings without allowing an earned run.

However, Stanford has made a habit of answering back in the ensuing inning, and did so again in the top of the sixth. Dunlap,?who finished 5-for-10 in the series, singled to leadoff. An error and sacrifice bunt set up runners at second and third for Edman, who came through again with a two-out single. Both runs scored and Stanford led, 4-2.

The Cardinal, which lost a two-run lead in the ninth on Friday, added some insurance this time. Matt Winaker, Mikey Diekroeger, Quinn Brodey and Beau Branton each had an RBI in the top of the ninth for a six-run cushion.

NOTABLES: Summerville's streak without an earned run dated back to his start against St. Mary's on March 1.

NEXT UP: Stanford returns to Sunken Diamond on Tuesday to host San Jose State at 5:30 p.m.
