SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The third-ranked Stanford men’s volleyball fell 19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25 at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, Saturday in Rob Gym, in the regular season finale for both teams.

UCSB (19-9, 14-8 MPSF) came out on fire, hitting .615 (17-1-26) in the opening set. Stanford (19-5, 17-5 MPSF) hit .333 and was led by freshman Jordan Ewert’s four kills on a .667 attack percentage.

Stanford evened the match at one set apiece, hitting .241 in the second while holding UCSB to a .171 clip. Sophomore Kyle Dagostino was a spark off the bench late in the set, serving tough and picking up two digs. The Cardinal also stepped up its defensive intensity, notching 12 digs and four blocks.

The Gauchos fired back in the third, hitting .385 as they held off a late run by the Cardinal. Stanford hit .200 in the set, but committed eight attack errors.

In the fourth, Stanford out hit UCSB .412 to .342 in the fourth, but was unable to overcome a 20-15 deficit down the stretch. Dagostino replaced sophomore Evan Enriques at libero in the set, finishing the match with five digs.

Ewert matched his career high with 11 kills and was one dig shy of a double-double. Senior Madison Hayden also tallied 11 kills to pace the Cardinal. Redshirt sophomore Kevin Rakestraw hit .692 with nine kills on 13 errorless swings.

Senior setter James Shaw tallied 31 assists and was 7-0-9 (.778) offensively. Senior middle blocker Conrad Kaminski added seven kills and five blocks, while Gabriel Vega had six kills, eight digs and two aces. Freshman setter Russell Dervay replaced Shaw in the fourth and finished with eight assists.

UCSB had four players register double-digit kills, led by Austin Kingi’s 14. Matt Marsh tallied 13 kills, while Hayden Boehle and Henri Cherry collected 12 apiece.
