STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford beach volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday, falling to Boise State, 3-2, before defeating Arizona State, 3-2, in a dramatic finish at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium.

“We really needed that final point from Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel to beat Arizona State. After losing our first dual of the day it was imperative that we build some momentum for tomorrow,” said head coach Denise Corlett. “The continued strong play of Merete Lutz and Halland McKenna has been particularly impressive as well.”

The Cardinal (5-6 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) began the day with a loss against Boise State (4-1). Tami Alade and Karina Robinson fell 21-14, 21-15 at the No. 5 spot, while Courtney Bowen and Jennifer DiSanto fell just short in the second set, losing 21-16, 25-23.

Merete Lutz and Halland McKenna, playing at the No. 3 position, got Stanford back into the dual with their fifth consecutive win, 21-16, 21-11.

The Broncos were able to clinch the dual with an 18-21, 21-16, 15-10 win at the No. 1 spot over Hayley Hodson and Payton Chang. Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel added a 21-19, 21-15 win at the No. 2 spot to make the final score 3-2.

The Cardinal returned in the afternoon with a 3-2 win against Arizona State (8-8, 1-3). Stanford fell behind with Alexis Froistad and Robinson losing 21-14, 21-18 at the No. 5 spot before Bowen and DiSanto equalized with a 21-14, 12-21, 15-11 win at No. 4.

Lutz and McKenna won their sixth-consecutive match at No. 3 by a score of 21-18, 16-21, 15-13. Hodson and Chang fell 21-17, 20-22, 15-11 at the top spot, but Vanjak and Raquel clinched the win for Stanford with a 21-17, 20-22, 15-11 win in the two hole.

Stanford returns to the sand Sunday with matches against Oregon at 11:30 a.m. PT and Saint Mary’s at 2:30 p.m. at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium.
