TULSA, Okla. – For the fourth time this year and the 126th in history, Stanford and UCLA will meet in men's tennis, this time in the NCAA Round of 16 on Friday. UCLA leads the all-time series, 67-58. The match is set for Friday at 5 p.m. in Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Stanford is seeking its first victory over UCLA this season, coming closest in a 4-3 loss at home February 27. The Bruins won 4-1 in Westwood and again in Ojai in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals.
Double Your Fun: In each of the match-ups against the Bruins the Cardinal has dominated the doubles point all three times. Overall against UCLA this season Stanford is 6-1 in doubles matches.
The Last Time: Stanford hasn’t faced a Pac-12 foe in the NCAA Tournament since 2011 when it topped No. 25 Washington 4-1 in the Second Round. The last time it faced UCLA was in 2010 in a 4-2 loss in the Round of 16 in Athens, Ga.
Leaky Fawcett: There’s no stopping the floodgate that is sophomore Tom Fawcett as he seems to be hitting his stride at the right time. He’s collected back-to-back wins over ranked opponents in the NCAA First and Second Rounds and holds a 15-7 record against ranked opponents this season. He’s also paired up with Maciek Romanowicz to hold a No. 23 ranking in doubles with a 16-6 overall record and 10-4 record in dual action.
Stay Gold: While the athletes tend to get the accolades, Paul Goldstein in only his second year has lived up to the legacy that is the Stanford Men’s Tennis program. After a 2014-2015 season that saw the program notch its first NCAA win since 2012, he’s now brought the Cardinal back to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2012, and he’s done with a line-up laden with underclassmen. A phenomenal athlete for the Cardinal that was the first athlete to win four NCAA titles as a starting competing member of the team, he’s taken the reigns to continue the immense legacy that Stanford tennis embodies and found success rapidly.
