STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford alumna Foluke Akinradewo ('09) has been named to the 12-player U.S. Olympic Women's Volleyball Team roster that will compete in the 2016 Olympic Games from Aug. 6-20 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The ninth individual Olympian in program history, Akinradewo helped guide the U.S. to a silver medal at the 2012 Games in London. Still searching for the elusive gold medal, the U.S. women's indoor team has won three silver medals (1984, 2008, 2012) and one bronze (1992).
At Stanford, Akinradewo led the Cardinal to three consecutive NCAA runner-up finishes (2006-08) and was the seventh four-time AVCA All-American in school history. The Plantation, Florida native was the 2007 AVCA National Player of the Year and the 2008 Volleyball Magazine Co-National Player of the Year. Her .446 career hitting percentage is a school record and ranks third among all NCAA Division I players.
Akinradewo is one of four returners from the London Games on the 2016 roster, joined by middle Christa Dietzen, outside hitter Jordan Larson and setter Courtney Thompson. New U.S. Olympians include outside hitters Kim Hill and Kelsey Robinson, middle Rachael Adams, opposites Karsta Lowe and Kelly Murphy, setters Alisha Glass and Carli Lloyd and libero Kayla Banwarth.
"We aspire to be a team that adds up to far more than the sums of our parts," U.S. Women's National Team head coach Karch Kiraly said. "We are extremely fortunate to have so many great people and great players who give us so much passion and effort to this program – and we will look to honor their contributions by competing our hardest in Rio. Ultimately, we have assembled a group that we believe is capable of embracing the challenges a tournament like the Olympics will surely present."
