STANFORD, Calif. – Alana Cook earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping lead Stanford to two season-opening road victories this past weekend, as announced Tuesday by the conference.
Cook, the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, scored the first goal of Stanford's season at Navy with a perfectly played header off a corner kick. Andi Sullivan sent in a cross that Cook jumped over a defender to win, headed the ball into the ground and looped her shot over the head of the goalkeeper and the defender guarding the far post.
It is the second consecutive season Cook has scored in the season-opener after scoring the game-winning goal in her collegiate debut at Hawai'i a year ago.
Cook is coming off a successful freshman campaign in which she was named to the All-Pac-12 second team, Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and the TopDrawerSoccer Postseason Freshman Best XI First Team. She has started all 25 games of her collegiate career and is one of two Stanford players to have played every minute in both games this season.
It is the second career Pac-12 weekly award for Cook after earning her first on Nov. 3, 2015.
Cook and the Cardinal play host to No. 7 Florida in its home opener Friday at 8 p.m. (PT).
