Cardinal Blanks Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – The 19th-ranked Cardinal showcased an all-around team effort Tuesday afternoon as it took a 1-0 win over the Cornell Big Red off a goal by captain Sarah Helgeson.

The first half saw the Cardinal (2-4) throw down a brutal offensive assault with a season-high 11 shots in a half on the Big Red (3-2). Cornell wasn't able to keep Stanford quiet throughout with Sarah Helgeson putting away a cross that bounced off the post for her second goal of the season to make it 1-0 headed into the break.

The second half opened up with a small flurry of four Cornell shots that saw Caroline Beaudoin step up for a defensive save on, while Stanford kept firing away on all cylinders to amass a season-high 19 shots. The Cardinal defense was phenomenal in the game, tying a season-low three shots on goal allowed as Stanford controlled the tempo throughout.

The Cardinal will return to action next week as it travels east again to take on UMass and Yale. Stanford will take on the Minutewomen on Friday, September 23 at 1 p.m. (PT) before facing the Yale Bulldogs Sunday at 9 a.m.
