STANFORD, Calif. - Head Coach Mark Marquess announced a promotion and addition to the Stanford baseball staff on Thursday morning. Former volunteer assistant Jon Karcich will now serve as a full-time assistant coach and Nicholas Enriquez will assume Karcich's duties as a volunteer assistant for the Cardinal.
"We are lucky to have someone of Jon's caliber already on staff," Marquess said. "Jon has earned this position and is well prepared for it. He has worked extremely hard over the past two seasons, and is well-respected among our student-athletes and alumni. I am really excited about our future as we are also pleased to announce the addition of Nicholas Enriquez to the program. We are really fortunate to get someone with his experience."
Karcich worked closely with the Stanford defense which finished No. 1 in the nation with a school-record fielding percentage of .983 last season. The former seventh-round draft pick was a standout shortstop at Santa Clara and played three years in the minors, reaching as high as Triple-A.
"The Stanford standard of excellence is a great environment to be around, and I'm really excited to continue my coaching career here," Karcich said. "For the past two seasons, I have been lucky to work under Coach Marquess -- one of the all-time greats in this profession -- and with some of the most talented student-athletes in the nation. I'm excited to continue to work with this group and to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves."
Karcich replaces Brock Ungricht, who was hired as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals near his hometown of San Diego.
Enriquez will take on Karcich's role to round out the coaching staff. The Salinas, Calif., native comes to The Farm after four seasons at San Jose State. He also spent the previous eight years at Dartmouth where he was part of two Ivy League titles (2009, 2010), the Big Green's first victory at an NCAA Regional in 23 years, and the program's first 30-win season.
Stanford will begin Fall practice when the students return to campus for the first day of classes on Sept. 26.
