LOS ANGELES – In a battle of two 5-3 teams in the Pac-12, No. 15 UCLA came out on top of No. 14 Stanford, Friday, 17-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22, at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruins (15-4, 6-3 Pac-12) snapped a seven-match losing streak to the Cardinal (11-6, 5-4 Pac-12) dating back to 2011. UCLA out hit Stanford .260 to .240. The Cardinal is now 0-4 on the season when being out hit by its opponents.
Playing without its kills and blocks leader Inky Ajanaku, who sustained an injury during warmups, the Cardinal struggled to make up for those points after it won the opening set.
Freshman setter Jenna Gray controlled the offense with a career-high 41 assists. She also tallied career-bests four kills and two blocks. Freshman libero Morgan Hentz matched her career-best with a match-high 27 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Kathryn Plummer led the Cardinal with 16 kills, 11 digs and two aces for her team-best fourth double-double of the year. Freshman middle blocker Audriana Fitzmorris tallied 14 kills on .444 hitting and five blocks, while redshirt junior outside hitter Ivana Vanjak finished with nine kills and two blocks.
Redshirt junior opposite Merete Lutz added seven kills and three blocks for Stanford, while senior Kelsey Humphreys collected 10 digs, three assists and an ace. Starting in place of Ajanaku, sophomore Tami Alade had a match-high six blocks to go with three kills.
Torrey Van Winden had a match-best 19 kills on .417 hitting and nine digs for UCLA. Jordan Anderson, who sat out the first set, totaled 15 kills on .306 hitting, while Jennie Frager finished with 11 kills on a .409 attack percentage.
Up next, Stanford heads across town to take on No. 25 USC on Sunday, Oct. 23. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPNU.
