Setback in Orlando

ORLANDO – Stanford, aided by Reid Travis' third double-double of the season, led for the majority of the game against Miami, but a late surge by the Hurricanes handed the Cardinal its first loss of the season, 67-53, Thursday in the Advocare Invitational at HP Field House.
 
Travis, who collected six rebounds by halftime, finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double in the Cardinal's five games this season. Fellow junior Dorian Pickens led Stanford offensively with 15 points against the Hurricanes.
 
Stanford (4-1) led by as many as eight early in the second half (33-25), however, the Hurricanes (4-0) stormed back with an 8-0 run to tie it up.
 
Stanford and Miami shared leads over the next couple minutes, before the Hurricanes took the lead for good, 48-45, with 9:20 to play.
 
The Cardinal cut Miami's lead to four (56-52) with 3:41 remaining, but the Hurricanes scored 11 of the final 12 points of the game to take the victory.
 
The Hurricanes out-scored the Cardinal, 44-26, in the second half, which proved to be the difference.
 
Miami's Ja'Quan Newton (20) and Anthony Lawrence (18) combined to score 38 of the Hurricanes' 67 points in the win.
 
Stanford used a 12-2 run midway through the first half to surge out a seven-point lead (16-9) in the opening period and held it for most of the first 20 minutes.  
 
Miami came back with a run of its own to tie it at 23-23 with 2:36 to play, but the Cardinal responded with the final four points of the half to take a four-point lead into the break.
 
The Cardinal have led at the half in every game this season.
 
Stanford moves on to face Indiana State on Friday at 10 a.m. PT in its next game in the Advocare Invitational. The Sycamores dropped a 73-71 decision to Iowa State in the tournament's first game of the day.
