Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford's Maddie Bauer was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's soccer, as announced Wednesday by the conference.

Bauer is the sixth Stanford player all-time to win the award, joining an elite group of past Cardinal winners including Mariah Nogueira (2012), Teresa Noyola (2011), Christen Press (2010), Ali Riley (2009) and Rachel Buehler (2007).

Bauer continues to add to her academic and athletic accolades. She was recently named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy – awarded annually to the best women's collegiate soccer player – and a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American – the only Pac-12 player selected.

Bauer carries a 3.56 GPA as an international relations major. Her studies specialize in international security, and social development and human well-being.

A four-year starter, Bauer anchored Stanford's backline and helped lead the Cardinal to an 18-2-1 record in 2016. The Cardinal held a 72-12-7 record during her career (.830).

Bauer was named a Senior CLASS Award top-30 finalist earlier this year, recognizing seniors who excel in the classroom, competition, character and community. She was a 2015 NSCAA Scholar All-American, the only representative from the Pac-12. She is also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection.

"Maddie is an incredible leader and has a strong work ethic," said head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "She leads by example and is highly respected by all of her teammates."

Bauer is a three-time NSCAA All-Pacific Region first team selection (2013, 2015, 2016) and a four-time All-Pac-12 selection, earning first-team honors in 2016.

She led a Stanford defense that did not give up more than two goals in all but one game during her career.

Bauer is an aggressive and physical defender who has great field awareness and often started Stanford's attack with her strong distribution skills.

During the summer before her senior year, Bauer worked as a product intern at a small startup in Palo Alto that creates personalized sports highlights and updates. She is serving as a teaching assistant for a public speaking class at Stanford during her senior year.
