Statement from Stanford Athletics

Stanford Community,

As you may already be aware, Yasmin Farooq has resigned her position as head coach of the Stanford women’s rowing program and has accepted an offer to become the head coach of the women’s rowing program at the University of Washington.

We have been very fortunate to have “Yaz” lead our women’s rowing program over the past decade. Her leadership and guidance as a mentor to our student-athletes these last 10 years has been extraordinary. We are grateful for everything Yaz has given to Stanford women’s rowing and the many lives she has touched inside and outside of the Stanford community during her tenure here.

Yaz has achieved tremendous success here at Stanford, punctuating her exceptional list of accomplishments with the first NCAA championship in program history in 2009. Yaz also guided the Cardinal to a Pac-12 Championship in 2014 – the first conference title in the program’s history. She has invested a great deal into the program and built Stanford into a perennial title contender. An Olympian and United States team captain herself, Yaz knows what it takes to compete and lead on the sport’s biggest stage. Under her direction, the Cardinal has finished in the top two at the Pac-12 Championships in six of the past eight years. Yaz, the 2009 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Coach of the Year, has coached her top three boats to a pair of NCAA titles and nine medals since 2008.

Stanford recently completed another successful campaign, placing fourth as a team and capturing the bronze in the varsity eight at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Three members of the Cardinal earned All-America selections this past year – more than any Division I women’s rowing program in the nation.

Yaz’s energy and passion for teaching have led to a successful career that transcends the college ranks. She has seen her student-athletes graduate and become world champions, Olympians and leaders in the business world.

We appreciate everything Yaz has given to Stanford University and her phenomenal work as the head coach of our women’s rowing over the last decade. A national search is underway to identify candidates and appoint a head coach that will continue to move the program forward as a national title contender year-after-year.

Yaz is an exceptional coach, leader and friend. She will be greatly missed by all of us here in the Stanford community.
