PASADENA, Calif. – Sparked by freshman Samuel Kwong's 12-0 debut in sabre, the Stanford men's fencing team successfully defended its title Sunday in the Western Invitational at Cal Tech, posting a 5-0 mark against five opponents.

The women's squad shared top honors with a 4-2 record versus six teams, as freshman Rose Adams went 8-1 in sabre, freshman Amanda Han 13-3 in epee, and senior Eliza Klyce 12-2 in foil.
Both teams were crowned champions of the Western Fencing Conference.

 Other competing schools included UC San Diego, the United States Air Force Academy, Northwestern, the University of Incarnate Word and Brandeis. Florida participated as a club team.

"We had some tremendous individual performances," said co-head coach Lisa Posthumus. "It was a great way to start the season."

Also shining for the men were freshman Cameron Woods (7-2) in epee and freshman Justin Kang (5-2) in foil.

Overall, the Cardinal posted 5-0 records in men's team, epee and sabre and a 4-1 tally in foil by defeating Cal Tech 23-4; Air Force 19-8; UC San Diego 17-10; Incarnate Word 22-5; and Brandeis 21-6
The women went 4-2 in team, 6-0 in epee, 3-2 in sabre and 2-4 in foil, downing Cal Tech 25-2; UC San Diego 15-12; lost to Air Force 12-15; beat Incarnate Word 21-6; and lost to Northwestern 15-12.

Stanford returns to competition on Feb. 4 at the Mid West Invitational in South Bend, Indiana.
