One Down

STANFORD, Calif. – With rain forcing No. 18 Stanford to face Eastern Washington indoors, the Cardinal remained stalwart in its presence on the court, blanking the Eagles 4-0 Friday morning at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

The Cardinal (1-0) opened up the day with Sameer Kumar taking on EWU's (1-1) Robert Dula. The Eagle surged out to take the first two points in the first set, but Kumar remained patient as he fired back to take a 6-2 in in the first. Dula wasn't finished though as he scrapped in the second set, only to be met with Kumar's consistent attack as Stanford took the first point with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Up next, Jack Barber saw his collegiate duals debut after coming off an outstanding Sherwood Cup where he topped No. 11 Gage Brymer. Barber was no less deft in his match-up against Victor Pereira as he took the first set 6-3. The Cardinal came out strong in the second set, though Pereira fought back to make it 5-4. While Barber found himself down 40-0 in the final game, the Cardinal rattled off four straight points to come back and seal the win 6-3, 6-4.

In the third match-up of the day, David Wilczynski took on EWU's Scott Paz. The Eagle scrapped at points, but Wilczynski remained in control throughout most of the match, dispatching Paz 6-2, 6-3 to put Stanford on the cusp of a win.

Roy Lederman stepped up next in his collegiate duals debut, facing Vuk Vuckovic in the final match. Lederman never even allowed Vuckovic into the match, as he put up a 6-1 win in the first and a dominating 6-0 performance in the second to finish the win for Stanford in a career-first clinching point.

The Cardinal returns to action Saturday as it sets to take on the BYU Cougars at the Broadway Tennis Center in Burlingame, Calif. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (PT)
