STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Makenzie Fischer was named MPSF/Kap7 Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season when the conference announced its weekly honors Tuesday afternoon.
Fischer had her best game in a Cardinal cap against Santa Clara on Saturday, scoring a season-high five goals in Stanford's 19-1 win. She scored three in the second quarter as No. 1 and undefeated Stanford (8-0) raced out to a 10-0 halftime lead and added her final two in the fourth.
The freshman is now tied for the team lead in goals (17) and averaging 2.13 per game, good for eighth in the league. Her five goals matched the highest total for a Stanford freshman in a single game over the past four seasons (Kat Klass – 2016; Anna Yelizarova – 2013).
Stanford returns to action at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine this Friday as the tournament's top seed. The Cardinal, which will be looking for its first title at the event since 2011, opens with a game against CSUN on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.
