STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford Cardinal continued its tear of deconstructing the top-10 teams in the nation posting a commanding 4-1 win over No. 8 Texas Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal (8-3) started off hot with doubles as Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender put away the first win of the day in the No. 2 spot, but the Longhorns (13-4) answered with a win at three to knot it up.
A battle royale awaited to decide the point at the No. 1 spot, but the return of Yale Goldberg cemented it in favor of the Cardinal as it defeated George Goldhoff and Leonardo Telles 7-5.
Singles saw the Longhorns jump out to a strong start on the Cardinal, gaining early leads in the first set. Stanford put an end to it rapidly after UT added its only point of the day at the four spot with Sameer Kumar gritting through a 7-5 first set to add another point with a 6-4 win over George Goldhoff to jump to a 2-1 lead.
Brandon Sutter stepped up to play lights out at the six position with a straight set win to put Stanford on the edge with a 3-1 lead. David Wilczynski claimed the clincher for the sixth time in his career and second of the season as he dropped 108th-ranked Leonardo Telles 6-4, 6-3.
The Cardinal goes for the trifecta against ranked opponents Saturday as it faces No. 31 TCU at 1 p.m. at Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
