STANFORD, Calif. -- Three Stanford fall student-athletes – Maddie Bauer, cross country's Sean McGorty, and Adam Warmoth – were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for their academic and athletic achievements.
NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners receive a one-time grant of $7,500. To qualify, they must be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate studies within the next three years. In addition to maintaining at least a 3.2 grade-point average, they must perform with distinction in their sport and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.
All three are interested in the business world, with different timetables. Bauer has yet to solidify her grad plans while in training camp with the Seattle Reign of the National Women's Soccer League. Her rookie season begins next month.
Bauer was a four-time All-Pac-12 selection in central defense for the women's soccer team, earning her initial first-team honor and NSCAA first-team All-America selection as a senior. Bauer was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America third team to cap off accolades from a Pac-12 championship season.
McGorty, a three-time All-America in men's cross country, will complete his master's in management science and engineering in the spring of 2018, when he will use his fifth year of eligibility in track and field. After that, McGorty plans to pursue an MBA.
"I believe the combination of my undergraduate, master's degree, and an MBA would set me up to accomplish everything I would like to in the future," McGorty said.
McGorty helped Stanford to second at the NCAA Championships and its third top-three finish in as many years. He is a two-time U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic choice and was the organization's 2015 national Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Warmoth, of men's water polo, has been co-terming and earns his master's this week in mechanical engineering to go with his undergraduate degree in engineering physics.
"I hope to use the money for business school to help me develop the leadership skills I gained through my time in Stanford Athletics," Warmoth said.
Warmoth played the two-meter/driver position for Stanford while earning Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic honors all four years with Outstanding or Superior merit.
Stanford student-athletes have earned a nation-leading 159 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, dating back to 1965 when football player Joe Neal became the first.
Bauer joins Rachel Buehler (2007-08) as recipients from women's soccer. McGorty is the fourth from men's cross country, joining Adam Tenforde (2003-04), Neftalem Araia (2007-08), and Chris Derrick (2011-12).
Warmoth is the 13th winner from men's water polo, joining Lawrence Bercutt (1994), Pasi Dutton (2001-02), Onno Koelman (2001-02), Nick Ellis (2002-03), Mike Derse (2003-04), Peter Varellas (2005-06), Sandy Hohener (2007-08), Will Hindle-Katel (2008-09), Jimmie Sandman (2009-10), Sage Wright (2010-11), Jacob Smith (2011-12), B.J. Churnside (2015-16).
