STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2 Cardinal will wrap up its 2017 regular season this weekend as it sets to host No. 12 California on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT in Burnham Pavilion in one last meet before postseason commences next week.
Stanford (12-2, 4-1 MPSF) has continued its incredible season, only suffering losses to the reigning Olympic Champions Japan and reigning back-to-back NCAA Champions Oklahoma.
Coming off a break for finals, the last time out for the Cardinal saw Stanford top No. 11 Michigan and No. 3 Illinois in a tri-meet hosted by the Wolverines.
Akash Modi took the event titles in pommel horse (14.800), parallel bars (15.050) and the all-around (87.700) while Josiah Eng claimed his fourth event title on rings (15.050).
Thus far on the year Stanford has yet to fall to Cal. In fact, the Cardinal swept the Bears in all five meetings with them in 2016. Cal has not defeated the Cardinal since January 25, 2014 in Burnham Pavilion.
Beast Modi:
Senior Akash Modi has been named a finalist for the 2017 Nissen-Emery Award, given annually to the top senior gymnast in the NCAA. Considered the Heisman Trophy of collegiate gymnastics, the award will be presented at the 2017 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Banquet in West Point, N.Y. in April.
One of the most decorated gymnasts in Stanford history, Modi is a 12-time All-American in the all-around (3), parallel bars (3), floor (2), high bar (2) and pommel horse (2). In addition, Modi has claimed NCAA titles in the all-around, high bar and parallel bars. The senior has claimed the honor of being named the MPSF Gymnast of the Year for three consecutive years – the first gymnast to do so since Olympic medalist Jonathan Horton.
Modi is one of just three Stanford gymnasts to win three or more individual NCAA titles and was named a 2016 Olympic Alternate for the Rio Games. For a complete list of Modi's accolades, please click here.
Cardinal fans can see Modi one final time at home in Burnham this weekend as the senior closes out one of the most impressive careers in NCAA history.
