STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Kris Bubic was on the short end of another pitcher's duel as No. 22 Stanford fell 4-0 in the series opener with Texas at Sunken Diamond.
Thursday night's loss snapped Stanford's six-game win streak as well as a 12-game home win streak that dated back to last season.
Stanford (6-3) had not trailed at home all season until the Longhorns opened the scoring with a run in the second. A bunt single and errant throw brought Kacy Clemens home from second.
The unearned run was the only tally for Texas against Bubic (1-2). In six innings, the southpaw struck out nine and walked just two – he has allowed just one earned run in his two losses this year.
Texas (7-3) doubled its lead in the seventh when Zane Gurwitz hit a solo homer to left. The Cardinal also walked a pair of runs home in the ninth.
Nolan Kingham and Beau Ridgeway completed the shut out for the Longhorns. Neither has given up a run this season.
Stanford's best threat came in the seventh with two on and one out, but a line out and strike out ended the inning.
NUMBERS…
Quinn Brodey, Duke Kinamon and Andrew Daschbach each had one of Stanford's three hits as Stanford fell to 5-1 at home this season. Tyler Thorne allowed one run and struck out two in 2.0 innings of relief, while freshman Zach Grech pitched the ninth for the Cardinal.
AND NOTABLES
Bubic, who set career highs with 10 and 11 strikeouts in his first two starts, has 30 punch outs in 18.2 innings and has struck out 42.2 percent of the batters he has faced this season … Stanford last trailed at No. 8 Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 19 (span of seven games) … The Cardinal's six-game win streak was its longest since winning nine in a row in 2013 … Stanford's home win streak was its longest since a 16-game stretch in 2004.
