STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Matt Winaker hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning, but No. 18 Stanford fell in extra innings to UCLA, 7-6, at Sunken Diamond on Saturday afternoon.
Stanford (19-12, 5-7 Pac-12) trailed by two when Winaker's blast sailed over the right field wall for a 6-5 lead. However, UCLA tied the game in the top of the ninth with a two-out, two-strike double to left center field, and the tying run scored from third.
The Bruins tacked one on in the 10th with a single and a double to take the lead. Stanford got the tying run to third with one out, but a line out and ground out ended the game.
UCLA (16-16, 9-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second. The Bruins added another run with a two-out RBI single in the fourth, and went ahead 4-0 on a two-run homer from Michael Toglia in the sixth.
Stanford got on the board with an RBI single from senior Jack Klein in the sixth, and pulled within one in the seventh. Winaker doubled, Quinn Brodey singled him home, and Daniel Bakst followed with a double into the right center field gap. Brodey scored from first to pull within 4-3.
That set up Winaker's momentary heroics. UCLA had increased its lead to 5-3 with a solo shot, but freshman Maverick Handley led off the home half of the eighth with a walk, and sophomore Duke Kinamon singled him to second. Winaker brought everyone home with the potential game-winner, but the Bruins responded to win the rubber match.
NUMBERS…
Senior starter Chris Castellanos went 7.1 innings, scattered seven hits and struck out two. Junior Colton Hock (5-1), who earned the win on Friday with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, entered in the ninth and took his first loss of the season. Winaker was 3-for-5 with two runs, three RBI, a double, walk, and the home run. Brodey also added a three-hit day in five at-bats and scored twice. Kinamon was 2-for-4 with a run, double and sacrifice bunt.
