Social • Facebook • Twitter STANFORD, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford begins its postseason this Saturday as it travels to Berkeley to pursue its fifth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title. Meet time is set for 2 p.m. PT at Cal's Haas Pavilion.
The Cardinal (13-2, 5-1 MPSF) claimed MPSF championships in 1993, 1995, 2009 and 2011 and went on to win the NCAA Championship in each of those seasons.
Stanford has been strong all season, spending every week ranked No. 2 in the NCAA. The Cardinal has broken the 420-point mark five times this season, as well as posting an incredible 432.050 against No. 1 Oklahoma.
In addition, Stanford has finished first in every meet except its head-to-head against No. 1 Oklahoma and reigning Olympic Champion Japan.
Last Week:
The Cardinal closed out its regular season with a final dual against No. 12 Cal where Stanford swept every team and individual event title for the fourth time this season against the Bears.
Akash Modi closed out his career at Burnham Pavilion with four event titles in the all-around, floor, pommel horse and parallel bars, which earned him CGA and MPSF Gymnast of the Week honors.
The Cardinal also elevated as a team posting season-high scores in floor (73.600) and parallel bars (71.500).
Beast Modi:
Senior Akash Modi has been named a finalist for the 2017 Nissen-Emery Award, given annually to the top senior gymnast in the NCAA. Considered the Heisman Trophy of collegiate gymnastics, the award will be presented at the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championship Banquet in West Point, N.Y. this month.
One of the most decorated gymnasts in Stanford history, Modi is a 12-time All-American in the all-around (3), parallel bars (3), floor (2), high bar (2) and pommel horse (2). In addition, Modi has claimed NCAA titles in the all-around, high bar and parallel bars. The senior has also been named the MPSF Gymnast of the Year for three consecutive years – the first gymnast to do so since Olympic medalist Jonathan Horton.
Modi is one of just three Stanford gymnasts to win three or more individual NCAA titles and was named a 2016 Olympic Alternate for the Rio Games. For a complete list of Modi's accolades, please click here.
