Lee Named Nation's Top Frosh

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Andrea Lee of Stanford earned two prestigious honors Tuesday at the NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farm.

She was named the 2016-17 WGCA Division I Freshman of the Year, the first individual national award ever accorded to the Cardinal program. Lee was also selected a WGCA First Team All-American.

"Andrea is a high caliber player and very deserving of these honors," said Anne Walker, the Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf. "It's a privilege to have her on our team. Her freshman season has been one to remember and she has set the bar high for future Cardinal."

Previous recipients of the Freshman of the Year award include Lorena Ochoa and Brittany Lang.

"This award is a reflection of her play, her drive, competitiveness and overall ability," Walker said. "With this outstanding achievement, she has carved her name in the Stanford women's golf history books."

Lee was also a finalist for National Player of the Year.

A product of Hermosa Beach, California, she produced the best rookie season in school history. Lee won three tournaments and posted a Stanford freshman record 71.62 scoring record, breaking the previous mark of 72.03 set by Mariah Stackhouse in 2012-13.

An All-Pac-12 first team selection, Lee posted nine top 10 finishes in 11 starts and placed in the top three seven times. Her victories came at the season-opening Windy City Collegiate in Chicago, the East Lake Cup in Atlanta, and the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course.

In 29 rounds, Lee shot par or better 16 times and fired 11 scores in the 60s. Her low round was 67, which she accomplished four times.

Senior Casey Danielson from Osceola, Wisconsin, and freshman Albane Valenzuela from Geneva, Switzerland, were named WGCA Second Team All-Americans. Danielson has contributed eight top 10s this season, while Valenzuela won the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and tied for 10th on Monday in stroke play at the NCAA Championships.

Both were All-Pac-12 first team picks.
