STANFORD, Calif. – Rising sophomore Mikaela Brewer and incoming freshman Alyssa Jerome have been invited to participate in Canada's U19 National Team tryouts.
The camp, which takes place at Humber College in Toronto from July 2-4, will be used to evaluate athletes and form a roster for the FIBA U19 World Cup in Italy at the end of next month. Training camp will follow tryouts from July 5-11 and the finalized roster will travel to Voiron, France for an exhibition tournament against France, Australia and China from July 15-17.
The biennial FIBA U19 World Cup is taking place in Udine and Cividale del Friulli, Italy from July 22-30. Canada, ranked fourth in the FIBA youth girls rankings, will play fellow Group C members France, Latvia and Korea from July 22-25. All teams advance to the Round of 16, which begins on July 28.
Both Brewer and Jerome are Canada Basketball veterans. Brewer captained her country to silver at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Valdivia, Chile last summer, averaging 11.8 points on 49 percent shooting (24-of-49) in five games. She was also part of Canada's sixth-place squad at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship in the Czech Republic where she averaged 20.1 minutes, 8.0 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Brewer was selected to the Canadian National Team for the 2015 U19 World Championship in Chekhov, Russia, but was unable to compete due to injury.
Brewer appeared in 10 games off the bench as a freshman for the Cardinal and averaged 1.9 points and 0.6 rebounds in 6.0 minutes.
Jerome represented her country last summer at the both the FIBA U17 World Championships in Zaragoza, Spain and the aforementioned FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Chile. Canada finished seventh at the U17 World Championships, which ran from late June to early July, and Jerome averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in six games.
Less than two weeks later she was in Chile playing alongside Brewer at U18 FIBA Americas and helped Canada win silver to secure a spot in the 2017 U19 FIBA World Championships. Jerome averaged 15.8 points on 48.5 percent shooting, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
In the summer of 2015, Jerome was MVP of the FIBA Americas U16 Championships in Puebla, Mexico after averaging a near tournament double-double of 13.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
In May, Jerome was the second-youngest player invited to camp with the Canadian Senior Women's National Team, which was used to assess players as Canada prepares for a new Olympic qualifying cycle.
