During the 2016-17 campaign, Stanford extended two of the most unfathomable streaks in college athletics. The Cardinal captured its 23rd consecutive Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, presented to the most successful intercollegiate athletic department in the nation. Stanford has also won at least one NCAA championship in each of the last 41 seasons, the longest such streak in the nation.
Stanford collected NCAA crowns in men's soccer, women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving and women's water polo while also taking home the IRA National championship in lightweight rowing. Of Stanford's 137 championships overall, 113 are NCAA titles, tying UCLA for the most in the nation. Also in 2016-17, Stanford claimed the Capital One Cup on the women's side for the fourth time in seven years, and its fifth overall (men's 2015-16).
Stanford was equally successful in the classroom, with 17 varsity teams receiving APR Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA. Meanwhile, 14 teams earned a perfect score of 1,000 for the multi-year rate, measuring data collected over a span of four academic years.
