STANFORD, Calif. - Thomas Eager, Tommy Nicholson and Jack Marder will join the Stanford baseball coaching staff as announced by the new Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball David Esquer on Monday. Eager will serve as pitching coach, Nicholson as the assistant coach and Marder as a volunteer.
Eager was the pitching coach for Esquer for each of the past two seasons at Cal, where he helped mentor first round draft pick Dalton Jeffries. Prior to Cal, Eager held the same role at Cal Poly for three seasons. The Mustangs had seven pitchers drafted in that time, and posted the lowest ERA in the school's Division I history (3.05) in 2014 en route to a Division I program-record 47 wins and No. 1 seed at the NCAA Regionals. Before his promotion to pitching coach, Eager spent two seasons as the Director of Operations for his alma mater, Cal Poly, where he pitched in 2006 and 2007. A fifth round draft pick in 2007, he spent four years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
Tommy Nicholson
Nicholson spent last season as an assistant at Sacramento State, where he helped lead the Hornets to the Stanford Regional. It marked his second stint with the Hornets after he served as the team's infield and hitting coach in 2011 and 2012. Nicholson also had two stints at his alma mater, Texas. Following his playing career, where he only missed three starts in three years as the Longhorns second baseman and spent six years in the minor leagues, Nicholson was a volunteer assistant at Texas in 2009-10. From 2013-16, he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Longhorns under head coach Augie Garrido.
Jack Marder
Marder comes to The Farm after a season at Keiser University, an NAIA school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Marder led the recruiting operations and helped the Seahawks to the program's first World Series appearance, including a school-record 43 wins. Marder played for the University of Oregon as both a catcher and an infielder, and was drafted in the 16th round after his sophomore season. After four seasons in the Seattle Mariners organization, Marder served as an undergraduate coach at Oregon in 2015 and 2016 while he finished his degree in political science.
Esquer was announced as the 21st head coach in program history on June 16. He takes over for Mark Marquess, who retired after 41 seasons at the helm of the Cardinal and with the fourth-most wins in Division I history. Stanford, which was the No. 8 national seed and finished the season at 42-16, returns five of its eight starting position players and two of its starting pitchers.
