Stanford Falls in Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 1 Stanford lost its first match of the season, 3-2, at No. 8 Florida on Friday afternoon at Dizney Stadium.

The Cardinal (2-1) took the lead in the 59th minute thanks to Beattie Goad's second career goal, but the Gators (3-0) responded with goals in quick succession to take the lead.

Stanford outshot the Gators 14-8, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, but could not find an equalizer after Florida's tie-breaking goal in the 81st minute.

Stanford's streak of 10 games unbeaten in nonconference play was snapped, and it was just the second time since Sept. 11, 2005, in which Stanford has conceded three goals.

It was Florida's first win against Stanford in school history – the Cardinal entered the game with a 4-1-0 all-time record against the Gators.

Freshman forward Catarina Macario gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Sophomore Tierna Davidson made a driving run toward the box, unloading a powerful effort that the Florida keeper could only parry into the path of Macario. The freshman volleyed home with her first touch, scoring her fourth goal of the season.

After Florida equalized before halftime, Stanford again took the lead through sophomore Goad. Redshirt junior Jaye Boissiere beat her mark in the penalty area, reaching the end line before squaring to Goad, who finished making it 2-1 in the 59th minute. It was the team-leading third assist for Boissiere, who was also dangerous on set piece delivery.

Immediately following Goad's goal, goalkeeper Alison Jahansouz made an excellent save to preserve the lead, diving to her left to save Florida's curled effort.

Midfielder Andi Sullivan made her first start of the season after coming off the bench in both of Stanford's games on the opening weekend.

The Cardinal returns to action next week with its home opener against Georgetown at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Stanford takes on the Hoyas at 4 p.m. PT, and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a pair of thundersticks. The game will broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks and live statistics will be available at GoStanford.com.
