DURHAM, N.H. – Two goals and an assist from Corinne Zanolli combined with a stellar defensive effort pushed No. 12 Stanford's win streak to seven with a 4-1 win over the Maine Black Bears Sunday morning.
The Cardinal (7-2, 3-0 AE) needed only two minutes into the game before Zanolli cranked a ball that Kristina Bassi redirected to take the lead that Stanford would never relinquish. Zanolli struck again in the 14th minute with Millie Stefanowicz grabbing her first of two assists on the day with a ball passed through the top of the circle that Zanolli finished to make it 2-0.
Maine (6-3, 0-1 AE) cut the lead in half in the 15th minute as a penalty corner caused the Cardinal trouble again with Samantha Wagg putting a shot into the bottom right corner of the cage. Kelsey Bing also stepped up in the half with two saves as Stanford rolled into the break up 2-1.
The Cardinal controlled the second half as well, dominating in time of possession and defense. Stefanowicz and Zanolli would tag team again in the 53rd minute as Zanolli finished off another pass through the middle to make it 3-1.
Sarah Johnson closed out the game with her first career goal in the 59th minute after inserting a penalty corner that saw a shot rebound out to Johnson, who finished the goal with a shot to the bottom left of the cage.
The Cardinal remains on the road next week as it sets to face Ohio State at a neutral site match-up on Saturday at noon PT in Davis, Calif.
