CITY ISLAND, N.Y./NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Back on the East Coast after winning the Match Race Conference Championships at home last week, Stanford sailing earned a pair of Top 5 finishes with a fourth-place showing at the Danmark Trophy regatta and a runner-up finish at the Jesuit Open.
At the 15-team Jesuit Open, Stanford was second in both divisions and finished second overall with 58 points. Hobart and William Smith won with just 37 points. Freshman skipper Jack Parkin and senior crew Elena Vandenberg won the first race and then held second place throughout the rest of the regatta. The duo finished with 32 points. Meanwhile, in the B Division, junior skipper Mimi El-Khazindar and sophomore Madeline Bubb used a strong finish to place second with 26 points.
At the Coast Guard Academy, Stanford earned an impressive fourth-place finish. Last season, the Cardinal finished 11th at the Danmark Trophy.
In the A Division, senior skipper Will La Dow and sophomore crew Taylor Kirkpatrick finished third. The duo, which led through 11 races, finished with 103 points, but was edged by the hosts (97) and College of Charleston (93). In the B Division, sophomore Jacob Rosenberg skippered the Cardinal to a ninth-place finish with senior crew Kennedy Placek and junior Meg Gerli.
Last week, Romain Screve, Parker, and Vandenberg won the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Match Racing Championships in Redwood City to give the Cardinal the Richard B. Sweet Memorial Trophy for the first time since 2014, and a spot at the National Championships in Charleston, S.C.
Next week, the Cardinal compete in the Singlehanded Conference Championships in Santa Barbara, Calif., Oct. 7-8.
