STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Sameer Kumar reached the singles main draw quarterfinals to highlight the Cardinal contingent at the ITA Northwest Regional Tennis Championships at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Kumar defeated Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs in a thrilling three-set match Saturday, before dropping a 6-1, 6-4 decision to California's Paul Barretto Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Timothy Sah, playing in his first ITA event, earned three straight-set wins to earn a spot in Saturday's round of 16 match against Portland's Mike Pervolarakis, ranked No. 57 in the ITA rankings and seeded second in the draw. Pervolarakis prevailed in a three-set match to end Sah's run.
Kumar and Sah also had a strong run in the main doubles draw, where the duo advanced to the round of 16, before falling to California's Billy Griffith and JT Nishumura (CAL) on Saturday.
Kumar and Sah were part of a Stanford squad that included Sam Turchetta, Kento Perera, Nikita Demir, William Genesen and Jack Barber at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
Genesen rebounded from a defeat in the singles main draw to advance through to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. He dropped his quarterfinal match to UC Davis' Arjith Jayaraman Sunday afternoon.
Stanford will next compete in the ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells Nov. 1-5.
