CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stanford men's rowing opened the fall season at the 53rd annual Head of the Charles regatta on the Charles River near Boston over the weekend.
The Cardinal fielded an eight and a four in the championship races, with the four placing eighth among collegiate crews and the eight finishing 18th against other college entries.
"The Head of the Charles is always challenging with single-file racing through winding turns," said Stanford men's rowing head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "Entering a Championship eight and a four for the first time in program history, 14 rowers learned a great deal on strategy, fitness and the work that our sport demands."
The varsity eight, stroked by senior All-Pac-12 rower Jovanni Stefani, finished 21st overall, 18th among collegiate crews in Sunday's championship race that featured 26 crews. The Cardinal completed the course in 14:11.556.
The four, stroked by Bart Scherpbier, placed 14th overall, eighth among collegiate crews, in the 20-boat championship race. The Cardinal finished the course in 16:29.696.
Stanford will continue its fall slate in November, competing at the Head of the Lake in Seattle Nov. 11 and the Head of the Lagoon in Foster City, California, Nov. 12.
