Cardinal Falls in Overtime

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Marissa Cicione's sixth goal of the season and tough team defense wouldn't prove to be enough to power the No. 12 Cardinal past No. 20 Rutgers as Stanford fell 2-1 in overtime Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Scarlet Knights (8-5) jumped out quickly to put up two quick shots in the first half, but it took the Cardinal (7-4) only four minutes and one shot to take a 1-0 lead as Sarah Johnson teed up a corner that Corinne Zanolli deflected to Marissa Cicione. Rutgers kept the pressure up throughout though and managed to knot it in the 31st minute as the game rolled into the half with a 1-1 score.

The second half was a gritfest as both teams tried to keep the offensive firepower up with Stanford edging the Scarlet Knights in shots 6-5. Kelsey Bing was integral in the half with two of her five saves on the day as regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.

In overtime, Rutgers upped the intensity with three shots before the Scarlet Knights finally pounced on a penalty corner rebound in the 82nd minute to put the game away.

Stanford returns to action tomorrow taking on No. 4 Michigan at 11 a.m. PT aired live on BTN.
