PORTLAND (AP) — Preseason All-American Reid Travis came within one point of his career-high with his second double-double of the season, but Stanford dropped an 87-78 decision to Portland State in its final game of the PK80 Invitational Sunday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Travis posted a double-double in the first half and finished the game with 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Cardinal (3-5), playing its eighth game in 17 days. The junior forward recorded 29 points at No. 4 Kansas last December.
Deontae North had 22 points and seven rebounds and Bryce Canda added 17 points for the hometown Vikings (5-2), who erased a nine-point halftime deficit.
Portland State trailed by as many as 14 in the first half. But the Vikings cut that to nine at halftime and to five, 49-44, on Michael Mayhew's three-pointer with 16:54 left. They made it 55-all on Jamie Orme's basket about five minutes later.
Mayhew hit a three-pointer that made it 58-57, Portland State's first lead since the opening minutes. The Vikings led by as many as six points, saw the Cardinal close within three, then went ahead 72-62 after a 7-0 run capped by Holland Woods' steal and basket with 4:43 remaining.
Portland State led by as many as 17 in the closing minutes.
Woods added 13 points for the Vikings, all in the second half. North, who made 9 of 10 free throws and had three steals, scored 14 of his 22 points after halftime.
Stanford junior Robert Cartwright finished with a season-high 19 points, connecting on 3-of-4 three-point attempts. He came within two of his career-high of 21 against Washington State last January.
Stanford committed a season-high 28 turnovers in the contest, as Portland State scored 40 points of the Cardinal miscues, including 23 in the second half.
The Cardinal dropped to 2-1 all-time against the Vikings.
Stanford returns home, where it will face Montana Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT at Maples Pavilion. The Pac-12 Network will have live coverage of Wednesday's contest.
