STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford outside hitter Kathryn Plummer has been selected the ESPNw National Player of the Year, the site announced Tuesday.
Plummer joins the likes of USC's Samantha Bricio (2015) and Minneesota's Sara Wilhite (2016) as winners of the award. The sophomore is the youngest to earn the honor and becomes the 11th different Cardinal player to be awarded a national player of the year title.
A native of Aliso Viejo, California, Plummer leads the Pac-12 and ranks sixth in the nation in kills (4.73) and points per set (5.48). She is also fourth in the conference with 0.36 aces per set and ninth with a .323 hitting percentage. The Pac-12 Player of the Year and AVCA Pacific North Region Player of the Year, she leads the team with eight double-doubles. She has registered 20 or more kills in 11 matches this season, including a career-best 28 in a five-set win over UCLA, and has hit .400 or better in 15 matches.
Plummer is 30 kills away from 1,000 for her career. Her 539 kills in 2017 is the eighth-best mark in a single season in school history, while her 4.73 kills per set are 10th-best.
Plummer and the Cardinal are back in the national semifinals for the 21st time in program history - the most in the nation. No. 3 seed Stanford meets No. 2 seed Florida on Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT on ESPN.
