Butler Defeats Hall

TEMPE, Ariz. - Fifth-year senior Nathan Butler knocked-off No. 4 Tanner Hall at heavyweight, but Stanford fell 24-15 to No. 9 Arizona State, Friday, at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Sun Devils won six of the 10 bouts to improve to 8-2 on the year and 1-0 in the Pac-12 , while the Cardinal dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The dual started off at heavyweight with the top-10 matchup between Butler, who is ranked seventh nationally, and Hall. Tied 1-1 after regulation, both Butler and Hall scored an escape in the first set of tiebreakers. After no score in the second sudden victory period, Butler rode out Hall in the second tiebreaker to rack up 35 seconds in riding time. Hall gave up the escape point to make it 3-2 in favor of the Cardinal to start the final tiebreaker period, but was unable to take down Butler in the final frame.

Butler improves to 20-5 on the season and 6-1 in duals. He is now 4-2 all-time against Hall, and is just one win away from becoming the 10th Cardinal wrestler to register 100 career wins.

Arizona State won the next two bouts at 125 and 133 pounds to pull ahead 8-3 in the team score.

Sophomore Brandon Kier cut the Arizona State lead to two with a 3-2 decision over Nikko Villarreal at 141 pounds. Kier scored a takedown in the opening period, which proved to be the difference in the match. Kier is now 6-8 on the year and 2-1 in duals for the Cardinal.

The Sun Devils won the next four bouts to jump out to a 24-6 advantage in the dual. The Cardinal scored six team points at 184 pounds as Arizona State's Kordell Norfleet was disqualified for an unsportsmanlike move after body slamming freshman Judah Duhm late in the first period.

At 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore Austin Flores registered a 9-7 decision over Cade Belshay. Flores, who is wrestling up a weight class, scored three takedowns, a reversal and an escape in the win. He moves to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in duals this season.

Stanford looks to bounce back next Friday, Jan. 26 at Cal Poly. The Cardinal and Mustangs will square off at 7 p.m. in San Luis Obispo, California.
