Fischer Scores Five

Scoresheet Opens in a new window

BERKELEY, Calif. – Makenzie Fischer poured in five goals for the third time in her career and No. 1 Stanford beat No. 7 UC Irvine 12-2 at the Cal Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Fischer's five-goal outburst matched efforts from her freshman season against Santa Clara (Feb. 18, 2017) and Cal (Feb. 25, 2017) and moved the Cardinal to 20-0 all-time against the Anteaters. Stanford (2-0) beat the Chinese National Team 8-6 in an exhibition earlier in the day.

Stanford jumped on UC Irvine at the outset and scored the game's first four goals before the Anteaters broke through with 35 seconds left in the first quarter. Fischer scored at 6:35 and then converted a penalty at 5:44 before Madison Berggren and Katie Dudley rattled the cage in the latter half of the period.

The second quarter was more of the same for Stanford as it outscored UCI 5-1. Fischer had a mirror image of the first with a pair of goals, one at even strength (5:44) and another on a penalty shot (3:49). Cassidy Wiley (7:25), Berggren (2:43) and Aria Fischer (0:37) added tallies of their own and the Cardinal was up 9-2 at the break.

Stanford's defense, which allowed just two goals in the first half, stiffened even more in the second and didn't surrender a single score. Julia Hermann made four of her game-high six saves in the fourth quarter.

Fischer scored at 6:44 in the third to complete her strong afternoon before Jordan Raney fired and converted at 2:57. Kat Klass accounted for the only goal in the final frame at 4:22.

Stanford concludes the Cal Cup tomorrow with a pair of games against No. 22 Fresno State (11 a.m.) and No. 16 San Jose State (2:15 p.m.)
