STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 5 Stanford Cardinal set a standard Saturday at the 26th annual Stanford Open, posting the best team score in the NCAA this season with a 414.100 as well as team season-bests in every event en route to its third straight tri-meet sweep against No. 9 Cal and No. 15 Washington.
Stanford (6-0, 2-0 MPSF) started out on floor with four of six Cardinal posting a 14+ with Bryan Perla, Andrew Bitner, Ryan Sheppard and Bailey Perez all collecting season-best scores. Connor Lewis added a 14.550 for a career-best and the event title and his first career event title as Stanford posted a 71.250 team score – another NCAA season-best.
The Cardinal also improved on pommel horse with David Jessen and Joey Ringer leading the effort with a tie for the event title at 13.700 – a career-best for Jessen and season-best for Ringer leading Stanford to a 65.600 team score.
Thomas Lee continued his dominance on still rings with a career-best 14.000 to add his second event title of his career with Robert Neff right on his heels with a season-best 13.950. The Cardinal finished with a 68.300, the fourth-highest score in the NCAA.
Stanford shone in the next event as it dominated vault with Bailey Perez claiming his first collegiate event title with a career-best 14.750. Gareth Weiss took second in the event with a season-best 14.400 to lead the Cardinal to a 71.300 team score.
Parallel bars for the Cardinal was led by Jacob Barrus and Robert Neff who both posted a 14.200 to place second in the event while Blake Sun added a career-best 14.050 to power Stanford to a 69.750 score.
With the lead firmly in hand, the Cardinal closed out on high bar with Grant Breckenridge nailing a season-high 14.300 to take the event title with Robert Neff (14.100) and Ryan Sheppard (13.550) following in second and third to amass an NCAA-leading 67.900 team score.
Stanford returns to action next Saturday as it sets for one of the biggest meets of the season where it will face reigning three-time NCAA Champion, Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
