STANFORD, Calif. – No. 5 Stanford men's tennis heads to Seattle to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships Friday through Monday (Feb. 16-19) on the campus of the University of Washington.
The Cardinal, boasting its highest ITA ranking in nine seasons, is among the top 16 teams competing in the early-season national tournament. Stanford advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships with a 4-0 victory over Oregon and 4-1 win over No. 22 Tulane in Berkeley, California two weeks ago during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
"We are looking forward to the ITA National Indoor Championships," said Paul Goldstein, Stanford's Taube Family Director of Men's Tennis. "This will be a great experience for our team. It's our first time in this event since I have been the head coach here. Having faced some of these teams already, we have a comfort level of knowing the high level of competition that will be in this event. This team has earned its mention as one of the elite teams in the nation and I am excited for this opportunity."
Off to its best start in seven seasons, Stanford is 6-0 in dual play with wins over three top-10 teams in No. 5 USC, No. 6 UCLA and No. 10 Illinois.
The schedule ahead will continue to challenge the Cardinal with the strong field at the ITA National Indoor Championships. The event is a good glimpse at what the NCAA Tournament field could look like in a couple months. Stanford, the No. 5 seed will begin play against No. 12 seed Baylor at 3:30 p.m. PT on Friday. Depending on the results of Friday's match, the Cardinal will face either No. 4 seed Georgia or No. 13 seed Columbia on Saturday at either 12 p.m. PT or 6:30 p.m. PT.
The event, hosted by Washington, will be held at both the Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Seattle Tennis Club. Semifinal matches will take place on Sunday, culminating with the championship match on Monday.
Stanford has won the most ITA National Indoor Championships with 16 titles in the 43-year history of the event. The Cardinal most recently earned the crown in 2002. Stanford's last appearance at the ITA Indoor Championships was in 2012.
The Cardinal has already faced three teams in this year's ITA National Indoor Championships field in USC, UCLA and Illinois.
Senior Tom Fawcett, who has collected Pac-12 Player of the Week honors each of the past two weeks, is ranked No. 33 in the latest ITA singles rankings. He is 3-1 in dual play with wins over three top-50 opponents. Freshman Axel Geller made his ITA rankings debut at No. 75 last week. He is a perfect 6-0 in dual play with three victories over ranked opponents.
