BOSTON - No. 4 Stanford was tripped up by No. 5 Yale on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the CSA National Championships, with the Bulldogs prevailing 5-4.
Stanford (14-4) was seeking its third straight win in the series, which included a 6-3 victory in New Haven, Connecticut, three weeks ago. At last year's CSA National Championships, Stanford edged Yale 5-4 for the first time in school history to capture the tournament's consolation crown.
Instead, Yale (11-4) avenged the loss and booked a spot in Saturday's semifinals.
The bittersweet setback ends Stanford's outside shot at a national championship. The Cardinal falls to the consolation bracket, where it will square off against No. 8 Cornell (10-7) on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m. PT.
Stanford, which also had its four-match winning streak snapped, received wins from Sarah Bell, Christie Huchro, Sumrin P. Mudgil and Juliette Love.
